SCHLOSSER Fred.-Chret., HISTOIRE de l’ANTIQUITE / traduit de l’Allemand par M. P. A. De GOLBERY, chez F.G. Levrault, Paris, 1828. 3 vols in small 8vo, p. XI-529, [4]-539-[2] and [4}-449-[2].
First French translation, which was published in 1826. The aim of the work was to present the march of civilization, not only among the nations known to the Greeks and Romans, but also in India and China. Noted at the time by his breadth still unaccustomed to traditional historians and by his elegant style, the author did not apply the methodical criticism of the sources already developed by Niebuhr. Its success was more literary than historiographical. Friedrich Christoph Schlosser (1776-1861) taught history at the University of Heidelberg from 1819 until his death.
Contemporary half leather binding, marbled boards, spine with gilt title and numbering; medium rubbing and bumping along edges, some insect marks on 3rd’s vol. front cover. Colour marbled edges, spatial spotting inside, otherwise clean and very tight. Good copy.
