Διονύσιος Περιηγητής / Dionysius Periegetes – Pomponius Mela, “Dionysii Alex. et Pomp. Melae Situs orbis descriptio. Aethici Cosmographia. C. I. Solini Polyistor…”, [Geneva], Henry Stephanos, 1577. 4to, pp. [8], 15, [24], 152.
Dionysius, a poet of the second century ad, lived mainly in Rome where he worked as a librarian and wrote his Periegeses tis oecoumenes. The work acquired a significant place as a school text book and considered of great importance by the Italian Humanists. Henry Stephanos informs his readers that he proceeded to a fresh edition, thirty years after his father had published the work (1547), specifying that he has made corrections to the original text and that he has added his own Latin translation.
Contemporary full vellum (browned, soiled) with spine gilt decorated and gilt edges. Ex-libris cachet of the French statesman and agriculturist Adrien De Gasparin “Bibliothèque de Adrien De Gasparin”. Waterstain on inner hinge and upper part throughout. Few marginal notes. Rare.
