First edition of these translations, with original Greek and French translation printed to opposite sheets. Extensive notes in French. Pindar, Greek author of the 5th century BC, remains the most famous lyric poet, who was rediscovered at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. The translator and commentator, Michel-Paul-Gui de Chabanon (1730-1792), was an accomplished violinist and music theorist, as well as occasional poet, dramatist, and translator. He was among Voltaires correspondents, and his translations were well-received in some circles.
