GAUTIER Theophile, “Constantinople”, Paris, Michel Levy Freres, 1856. Small 8vo, pp. 364. Theophile Gautier (1811-1872) was a French poet and journalist. He visited the Levant several times during late 1840s and early 1850s. His narrative of his journey to Constantinople and its surroundings brims with the lyrical essence of the Victorian era, yet it remains remarkably precise in its depiction. The account includes also short descriptions of Malta, Syra & Smyrna. Contemporary leather spine and thick carton marbled boards. Rubbing along joints and extremities. Paper browning, especially of the last sheets.
