Romeyn de Hooghe, “Veroverig van Napoli di Romania” (Nafplion), 38x31cm, Amsterdam 1687. Romeyn de Hooghe was one of the most important late baroque Dutch painter and engraver. This extremely rare copper engraved view of the Venetian attack on the Nafplion castles in 1686, was probably initially drawn from an eyewitness. Morosini’s army had Dutch officers and engineers, as mercenaries. His conquests in the Morea did great impression all around Europe. Romeyn de Hooghe has made a painting of attack on Nafplio (this view), currently in the Dutch National Gallery. Just after, he engraved and separately printed, the same view of Nafplio (signed, R. de Hoogh fecit). Only two copies of this copper engraved view survive in Public libraries. Dutch National Library and BNF. As separately printed, were very vulnerable. This copy has survived and is intact, lightly folded to be inserted in a collection of prints, so it had been preserved up to now. An almost unobtainable, splendid, early view of Nafplio by a famous painter. EXTREMELY RARE
