Illustrated with a folding map (map of Athens and its surroundings) and 8 impressive engravings. In-12 (12 x 17.5 cm), pp.XX+336. With an introduction letter by Carl Wescher to the Editor. The work describes the Athenian monuments during the excavations which had begun soon after the foundation of the Greek state. According to Thouvenel, Roque came from a French-Greek family which had settled in Athens. He was a functionary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as secretary to the French Embassy in London and Paris. He died in 1870. Industrial binding, brown fabric spine, titrated gilt, marbled paper plates. Generally solid binding, very white paper, no freckles, remarkable condition for this rare book!
