CRASHED & RECOVERED MAIL: 20.11.1974. “RETRIEVED FROM AIR CRASH ON 20 NOVEMBER 1974 AT NAIROBI” lilac cachet (in Dutch & English) applied by the Nairobi Post Office on an air cover from Athens (18.11.74) to Cape Town. The Boeing 747 Jumbo “Hessen” of Lufthansa was flying between Frankfurt & Johannesburg. When leaving the airport of Nairobi, due to mechanical problem, it crashed & got fire on the ground. 59 people were killed. Hellas: CF 40.
