Chandler Richard, "Travels in Asia Minor, or an Account of a Tour made at the expense of the Society of Dilettanti", Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1775. First edition, print run: 500 copies. 4to, (26x22cm), pp.283. Complete with the folding map of Greek Archipelago and Asia Minors coastline. Chandler visited the Levant along with Revett and Pars and spent almost two years in western Asia Minor and mainland Greece, returning in 1766. This was the first expedition undertaken sorely at the expenses of the Society of Dilettanti. It was the first time ever that a scientific mission visited and discovered the ancient Greek cities and sites of the Anatolian coastline. The account is also precious for the detailed descriptions of the people and society of the Anatolia, still completely unexplored at that time. This was the first part of his accounts in the Levant, that were concluded with another edition about his Travels in Greece the following year. Contemporary full calf slightly rubbed. A very clean and nice copy. Atabey 215, Blackmer 318.
