Fine contemporary binding, half calf over boards, a fine and clean set. A reference work on the history of the Ottoman Empire. This work that needed more than 30 years to be accomplished, is still considered as a basic reference with most works that followed relying upon it. Hammer-Purgstall (1774-1856), an Austrian traveler and orientalist, travelled and stayed more than 10 years in the Levant in the early 19th century. Appointed in the Austrian embassy in 1799, he visited the area several times up to the 1820s in order to collect material for this work. A fine set of an influential work.
