In the eve of the Bayram, on the 22nd of June, three small Greek ships under the command of Constantine Kanaris, approached during nighttime the Turkish fleet at Chios port and set on fire the flagship of the Turkish admiral Nasuhzade Ali Pasha in revenge for the Chios Massacre. Total disorder and panic followed as the rest of the Turk ships tried to escape. The Kapudan Pasha, burnt & wounded has been transported to Chios, and passed away after half an hour. Three more large ships of the line have been seriously damaged, the rest escaped.
