[Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax] GAIL J. F., "Scylaceus Orbis, sive Tabula Geographica... Illyria, Graecia, Thessalia, Macedonia, Chersonesus, Thracia... 1825 / Grave par Berthe". Rare map (59x25cm) presenting the "Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax" sea route around the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The main map extends from the Gibraltar to Cyprus and the eastern edges of the Black sea and is enriched with two inset maps of Central Greece and Crete. J. F. Gail was a French classicist. With his work "Dissertation sur le Périple de Seylax" published in 1825, he marked the beginning of modern critical study of the Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax. However the current map does not appear in that 1825 publication. Folded as issued. Rare.
