Chardin J., ”Voyage de M.Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l Orient”, Paris 1811. The Langles edition. Atlas volume only. Imperial FOLIO 53x35cm. Contemporary cloth over boards, not an impressive binding, but still firm, internally very light scattered spotting, generally very clean. One big folded map of the Levant and 79 copper engraved plates (several folded) in 58 sheets in total. A very good copy. Chardin travelled in Persia and the Levant in the late 17th century. In early 19th century Napoleon renewed the relations with Persia. As no major work had been published since Chardin time, Langles, a leading orientalist, with the support of the French government, republished Chardin’s journey but with mostly new plates, drawn by contemporary artists that had visited Persia with Napoleon’s embassy in 1807-08. The new general map of the Levant had been prepared by Lapie and it is considered as the first accurate. An IMPRESSIVE WORK with fine newly drawn plates. Langles edition is RARE. Not in Atabey (this edition) or Blackmer.
