Tancoigne J., “Lettres sur la Perse et la Turquie d’Asie”, Paris, 1819. First and only edition. In 8vo 21x13cm. Complete two volumes: 302p., 295p. and the two beautiful color aquatints, contemporary leather slightly rubbed for volume one, contemporary leather slightly rubbed at spine, over boards for volume two, volumes exactly the same size but different contemporary binding, some light spotting in volume one, overall a very good set. Tancoigne was the official secretary of Gardane embassy of Napoleon to Persia, via Asia Minor in 1807-8. The mission was impressive, gathering the best French scientists and artists of its time and travelling through Anatolia in early 1807. As a member of the State embassy, Tancoigne could gather all available information (something impossible for the very few independent travellers of the time), keeping detailed calendar and forming a unique source of information. In his return Tancoigne followed a completely different route, through the Pontic Alps, Trepizond and the Pontic coast. He was among the very first who provides a very detailed early itinerary for Pontos area. Very rare.
