Impressive FOLIO, 56x40cm (Volume 1-Atlas of plates), and in 4to, 26x17cm (for the two volumes of text, part one and two), contemporary green library cloth, uniform, rubbed at corners (ex library of Pensylvania Library declassified, with several pierced stamps ), some defects in the first ten pages of volume one of text, otherwise very good and clean. Complete. Atlas: with ninety seven (97) Folio engraved and lithographed plates, some tinted and coloured, text volumes: 833p.(continuous pagination) with 14 engraved folded plates and 27 woodcut illustrations.Overall almost a very good set, never found complete. Charles Newton (1816-1894), a British archaeologist and traveller, is always remembered for the discovery and excavation of the famous Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is thoroughly depicted here in full page tinted lithographs and engravings, as well the excavations from Cnidus and Branchidae, ancient Greek tows in Karia, in Asia Minor. The two volumes of text includes a detailed calendar of travel account in Asia Minor (in its unique full publication) and the scientific results and discoveries of the excavations.
