Pinaeus Antonius: La Description des pays des Lieux mentionnes en ce livre,[Lyon] 1564. Fine woodcut map of Eastern Mediterranean, 20,5x15,5cm, in a sheet of 29x24cm (with geographical measurements), signed: Faciebat Antonius Pinaeus 1564. Folded as issued, marginal waterstain, marginal tear restored, overall very good condition. Antoine du Pinet (1510-1584), in Latin Pinaeus, a French Protestant writer, editor and cartographer published this, completely different, religious map of the Eastern Mediterranean, in an effort to counter the already published map of Postel. As can be seen is more a religious than an accurate geographical representation. Cyprus is still present, but most of the islands are inexistent and the coastlines of the continents are mostly very inaccurate, resembling medieval times religious maps. Pinet map (probably Zacharakis reference 236b,under Dupinet(?) had not, the solid geographical base of Postel, but it is actually much rarer. Nevertheless, these two maps were among the very first ever religious maps of the lands visited by the Apostles. The dated and signed first edition is Extremely rare.
