SPON Jacob, "Miscellanea eruditae antiquitatis: in quibus marmora, statuae, musiua, toremumata, gemmae, numismata ... huiusque inedita referuntur ac illustrantur", Suptibus Fratrum Huguetan, Lyon, 1685. Title page printed in red and black, with title vignette engraved by Mathieu Ôgier. Richly illustrated with numerous engravings by Mathieu Ôgier and M. Demasso. Jacob Spon, French doctor and archaeologist, was a pioneer in the exploration of the monuments of Greece. He travelled to Italy, and then to Greece, to Constantinople and the Levant in 1675–1676, studying and acquiring many valuable treasures, coins, inscriptions and manuscripts. "Miscellanea eruditae antiquitatis", his latest work, is a collection of epigraphs and antiquities gleaned throughout his life. In the preface he offers one of the earliest definitions of "archaeologia", as a science of the ancient world, of which numismatics, epigraphy, iconography, the study of ancient buildings, etc. are just parts of it (Brunet, V, 500). Publisher: "Suptibus Fratrum Huguetan" on contemporary paper strip covering the printed "Sumptibus auctoris" (like the copies of Zentralbibliothek Solothurn & Deutsches Archaologisches Institut). Contemporary full vellum, only occasional very light spotting. Very fine copy.
