Ortelius: CIPRI et EUBEA et altre ISOLE, copper engraved map 48x37cm of CYPRUS and 10 more main Greek islands, Evia, Rhodos, Lesvos, Limnos, Samos, Chios etc., Antwerpen 1608 or 1612, fine condition. ONE OF THE 300 COPIES EVER PRINTED. Italian text in verso. The two Italian editions of Ortelius (1608 and 1612) had a total print run of only 300 copies together and according Van der Krogt, the best Dutch researcher of modern times and the editor of Koeman recent catalogue, less than thirty (30) copies may have survived. The copper plate of the map has been reworked for this edition with differences from the earlier editions and it is unique (first appearance of the map in 1584). Identification of the map: Ort 216 (Koeman/ Meurer 8Pa-j, Karrow 1/162, var der Krogt AN: 7500+8130: 31), no analytical references in Zacharakis (although he does mention, in Zacharakis 2503, some differences from an earlier 2502 reference for the same main map, as the disappearance of two islands etc., our Italian edition map is, in some matters, a first issue of Zacharakis 2503, but the map of the Zacharakis reference seems to have some even more later characteristics. Our Italian map not in Zacharakis. A unique map which link Cyprus with the rest of the Greek islands in the late 16th century. The government of Cyprus has issued stamps with this map after the invasion of 1974. EXTREMELY RARE.
