A rare fine 18th century military wall map centered in Black Sea region, prepared just before the outbreak of the Austro-Russian-Turkish war (of 1787-92). The map depicts in high details a vast area from Greece and the Balkans on its western edge till Southern Russia, Caucasus, Turkey, Cyprus etc on its eastern edge. Beautiful copy, original hand colouring. The map was printed in six (6) map sheets dim.~54x48cm each, here attached on a period linen canvas. J. C. Rhode served as official geographer of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences from 1752 until his death in 1786. He produced few other maps in conjunction with the Academy, most of which focused on Prussian Territories. Rhodes works were intended to be exemplars of Prussian cartography under the patronage of Frederick II. Like the current example, his maps were lavishly engraved and often marked with Royal Prussian Academy stamps. Extremely Rare. Not in Zacharakis (Only sheet No.4 in Zacharakis #2745, under Preuss. Academie der Wissenchaft).
