ALDENHOVEN Ferdinand, Itineraire descriptif de lAttique et du Péloponèse, avec cartes et plans topographiques. Athens, chez Adolphe Nast, 1854. 2nd edition, in 8vo, XXVIII + 436 pages. With 19 plates and maps out of text (missing the plan at the end of the book), some folding. The lithographs are by the author. Ferdinand Aldenhoven was an army officer, topographer and engineer from Köln. He must have arrived in Greece with King Otto and his Bavarian court, and probably stayed in Greece for approximately ten years. While in Athens, he published a road map of the Peloponnese, and a road index with descriptions in French (1841). A topographic plan of Athens, etched by A. Forster (1837) and explanatory notes to F. Stademanns “Panorama”, both by Aldenhoven, were printed in Munich. Bound in half-brown sheepskin, spine with gilt title and decoration, leather covers simulating lizard skin; visibly worn, mainly on extremities. Clean and tight inside, some creases and tears on folding maps. Very Good and Rare. Good copy.
