ORTELIUS A., “Africae Tabula Nova / Editant Veppiae 1570”. Impressive full hand-coloured late 16th century map of Africa, dim. 50.5 x 38cm, issued in Ortelius Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas. The Ortelius’s map of Africa is based upon Gastaldis 8 sheet wall map and Mercators world map of 1569. The map was the first widely disseminated modernized map of Africa in the latter part of the 16th Century and became the standard map of the continent until well into the 17th Century (Tooley).The current map was printed between 1570 & 1606, as it bears the date 1570 in title cartouche (removed after 1606). The exact map edition is not determined, as the map is framed.
