BLAEU Willem J., "Candia olim Creta", c,1650. Copper engraved map in fine contemporary colours & wide margins. Ornated with a nice cartouche, ships and shields for coat of arms. The map follows the "new" geographical outline of Crete, first issued by Ortelius in 1584, depicting more accurately the outline and the geographical position of the island, comparing to the 16th century Ptolemaic maps. The current map issued by Willem J. Blaeu is based on the Mercators map of 1589, with the addition of exceptionally calligraphic lettering and elaborate cartouche. Light spotting otherwise very fine. Map dim.52x38cm. Zacharakis 386, Zacharakis "One Hunderd Landmarks...", No.31A.
