This is the second and enlarged edition of Pouqueville’s influential travel account, an undoubtedly invaluable guide for all subsequent 19th century travelers. Pouqueville matches ancient place names to modern locations using classical sources, church archives and Ottoman records, he is an impartial narrator of military events and gives a clear picture of the economic sizes in every region. Beautiful uniform contemporary binding: Boards beautifully paneled in gilt and with impressive blind-stamped “Institution Hallays – Dabot et Galleron” coat of arms in gilt, spine with title-volume number-decorations in gilt, marbled edges. Slightly rubbed, more evident in volumes 4, 6 & 1. Minor wear along joints. One map detached. Occasional light spotting inside. Overall a fine set. Blackmer 1346, Atabey 991, Contominas 579.
