Vander AA Pierre, “L. Rouwolfs Reys – Togten, door de LEVANT, ef Oosterse Landschappen der Middelandse Zee / Voyages de Leonard Rouwolf dans le Levant ou dans les Pays qui sont a l’orient de la Mer Mediterranee… Pierre vander Aa, a Leide, Avec Privilege". Very Rare map NOT IN ZACHARAKIS from Van der Aa "Cartes Des Itineraires & Voiages Modernes...", Leiden, 1707. The map presents the route of the botanist and traveller Leonhard Rauwolf through the Mediterranean and Cyprus to the Holy Land, a travel undertaken in 1573–75. The map sheet comprises of two different copper plates, as the map plate is framed by another finely engraved decorative plate. The combination of the two plates in a single sheet creates an impressive space perspective and it is highly unusual. The map is coloured by a contemporary hand and presents the title in a decorative cartouche depicting travelers offering gifts to an oriental nobleman. Zacharakis tracks a state of the map without the fine decorative frame (Zacharakis 72) and with a different “privilege” text on the lower part of the map. Dark impression, only marginal light water-stains and signs of self-adhesive tape on upper marginal edge. Map plate in extremely fine condition. Very Rare.
