GIBBONS Herbert Adams, “The Foundation of the Ottoman Empire. A History of the Osmanlis up to the death of Bayezid I (1300-1403)”, New York, The Century Co., 1916. This is the seminal study of the American journalist H. A. Gibbons, written during his residence in Constantinople between 1908 & 1918. As stated in the preface, the author investigates the origins of the Ottoman Empire “during the most disastrous period of its decline”, bringing “a new point of view… of the 20th cent. problems of the Near East”. During this time Gibbons was a correspondent for the New York Herald and witnessed the Turkish atrocities against the Armenians, and after against the Greeks in early 1922. Original blind-stamped cloth covers. Complete with six maps, one folding. Fine condition with just occasional spotting.
