Fascinating work on ancient dress, ornaments, and furnishings of the Egyptians, Greeks, barbarian nations, Hebrews, Romans, Etruscans, Latins, and Samnites. Most of the images are taken from statues, bas-reliefs and coins. André Corneile Lens (1739-1822) was a Flemish painter who specialized in painting stories from the Bible, mythological characters and portraits. Wishing to contribute to the revival of painting in Flanders, he drew inspiration from the classical traditions of the 16th century and authors such as Raphael. Beautiful contemporary full brown leather, smooth spine adorned with gilt fillets, title label in black calfskin, gold ornamental bar on both covers; spine and corners restored, however some cracks on hinges still visible; rubbing throughout. Marbled end papers and edges, clean and tight inside, page foxing and spotting; engravings in good condition. Second edition, notably enlarged with respect to the first of 1776, of considerable rarity and much esteem.
