Large 8vo, pp.XXII, [2], 442, [2] + 108 plates & 2 Maps of Cyprus on 110 sheets at the end. Palma di Cesnola was appointed consul in Cyprus for more than 10 years, from 1865-76. The current work is mainly an account of the excavations that he conducted in Cyprus during this time. Censola left Cyprus with a massive collection of 10.000 pieces of Cyprian antiquities, which he finally sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York. He served as the first director of the Museum from 1879-1904. Contemporary leather spine with raised bands decorated in gilt. Rubbed externally, light spotting inside.
