Büsching (1724-1793), a famous German theologian and geographer, whose Erdbeschreibung ("EARTH DESCRIPTION") was the first geographical work of any scientific merit. It consists of 7parts, of which the first four, covering Europe, were published in 1754–1761, and were translated into several languages. In 1768 the fifth part was published, being the first volume upon Asia, containing Asiatic Turkey and Arabia. It displays an immense extent of research, and is generally considered as his masterpiece. It contains descriptions of Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Poland, Prussia, Hungary, the Ottoman Empire (Balkans – Greece), Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Great Britain and Ireland. About half the volume, however, is dedicated to Austria and Germany. The descriptions contain geographical data as well as historical, administrative and economic remarks. Büschings extensive work was continued by other hands until well into the 19th century. Full calf binding of the time with gilt decoration (5 nerves) and spine title labels (red morrocoy and black); spine visibly worn, misses a small piece on bottom. Covers rubbed and bumped, front cover semi-detached. Clean and tight interior, red coloured edges, some foxing and spotting.
