First Edition, in 16mo, p. lxviii, 351,[3],[6p. of Catalogue]. No map. From Abbé Seran de La Tour, a historian by training, we know among other things that he was close to Abbé Castel de Saint-Pierre (1658-1743), an early proponent of the ideas of the Enlightenment, that influenced Rousseau and Kant. Seran’s work consists almost exclusively of works devoted to ancient history (Scipio, Epaminondas, Philippe...) and for many inspired by Plutarchs Parallel Lives. Full contemporary calfskin, smooth spine adorned with large decorative cloisonné flowered irons, title piece in red morocco, red edges, rubbed and bumped covers. Coloured marbled endpapers, title vignette, engraved labels and capitals at the beginning of chapters. Good and Uncommon copy.
