He entered the congregation of the oratory at a young age and became a professor of rhetoric, making himself an expert in ecclesiastical history and mainly in the study of Hebrew. The “Life of the Emperor Julian” first was published in Paris, 1735 and it was reprinted in 1746, with additions and corrections. This work, although criticised by Voltaire and Condorcet, made the literary success of its author. Full speckled calfskin of the period, smooth spine adorned with gilt irons and fillets, red Morocco label with gilt title; covers, hinges, extremities visibly worn. Colour marbled endpapers and edges, notwithstanding, clean, solid and still attractive binding. Good.
