A very attractive edition illustrated with frontispiece, 1 engraved folded map (“Carte des Voyages de Telemaque”) and 12 full page plates out of text, at the beginning of each chapter. At the crossroads of the learning novel (for royal pupils) and the anti-absolutist political manifesto, the “Adventures of Telemachus” is an adventure novel, first published in 1699, that brought about both Fénelons disgrace at court and his immediate and subsequent celebrity. Text in French. Full calf binding of the period, gilded titling on the spine, along with floral motifs between 5 nerves and gilt coat of arms on boards; spine rubbed and chipped, missing a small part at bottom, cracked hinges, bumped corners.
