MARMONTEL Jean-François, “BELISAIRE”, à Paris, chez Merlin, 1767. In 12mo, p. (2) ll, X pp, 340, (3) ll. 1st Edition. With engraved frontispiece and 2 plates after designs by Gravelot and engraved by Massard, Le Veau, Levasseur et Masquelier. Slim small 8vo, contemporary polished tan calf, ornately gilt spine. A historical romance based on the Byzantine General Belisarius aroused much controversy in the reign of Louis XV, due to Marmontels advocacy of freedom of opinion and religious tolerance (it was condemned by the Sorbonne). This last chapter on civil tolerance provoked a fierce battle between the supporters of the Enlightenment and the supporters of the regime in place.
Contemporary full calfskin, smooth spine adorned with gilt fleurons, title label in red morocco, framing of a triple gilt fillet on the covers, blue edges speckled with white; Clearly rubbed and bumped. Some foxing and spotting inside, along with a small restoration on p. 117-118. Rare and Good Copy. Brunet III, 1440; Cioranescu, 43015; Cohen, 688.
