Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). “Verovering Van Napoli Di Romania, Argos Teres Corinth: et Nevens De Victorie Der s.r. Op De Turcke / R. de Hooghe fecit”, Amsterdam, 1687. Dim. 38x31cm. An extremely rare copper engraved view of the Venetian attack on the Nafplion (Ναύπλιο) in 1686, under the command of Francesco Morosini. Romeyn de Hooghe was one of the most important late baroque Dutch painters and engravers. This impressive view was probably initially drawn from an eyewitness, as Morosini army had Dutch officers and engineers, as mercenaries. Romeyn de Hooghe has made firstly a painting of this attack on Nafplio in the Dutch National Gallery. Just after, he engraved and separately printed the same view signed: “R. de Hoogh fecit”. As separately printed, this copper engraving is extremely rare and only two copies seem to survive in Public libraries: Dutch National Library and BNF. This copy presents heavy signs of wear: tear in the middle, loss of lower right extreme corner. However it has been pasted on a 18th cent. paper (prob. close to the publication date) and had been preserved up to now. In poor condition but EXTREMELY RARE.
