GREECE: Bronze commemorative medal for the Olympics 1896 In Athens. The Panathenaic Stadium surrounded by the legend “ΠΑΝΑΘΗΝΑΙΚΟΝ ΣΤΑΔΙΟΝ / ΗΡΩΔΗΣ – ΑΒΕΡΩΦ / ΕΝ ΑΘΗΝΑΙΣ” on obverse. Olive wreath surrounded by the legend “ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ / 776πΧ 1896” on reverse. Herod and Averof were the financiers of the construction of the Stadium. Struck by W Pittner (Wien) and engraved by K Choutopoulos (Athens). Diameter: 30mm. Weight: 10,8gr. Bent. Very Fine plus.
