Folio, [6], 176, 175-427, [3], 66, [12]. Text in parallel Greek & Latin with commentary and indexes in Latin. Title in red and black ink with large printer’s device. Engraved woodcut initials, head & tailpieces and 4 woodcut illustrations in text including «Πυθαγόρου οκτάχορδος λύρα» on pp.365.

Synesius was a Greek bishop of Ptolemais, important Neoplatonist philosopher and disciple of Hypatia. The text was translated from the original Greek by Denis Petau (Petavius in Latin, 1583-1652), a famous French theologian, scholar and cosmographer, on ancient and religious history and geography.

Contemporary full vellum with titled in gilt on spine. External light soiling and few small bumping spots. Title page with chipped edges, one hole and large water-stain evident until pp.63 and from pp.243-the end. Inner joint open but still firm. Ex libris “SEM. PROV. LUC. S. J. BIBL. PROF.” on title page with label on pastedown. Collated with the copy of University of Ghent.
