Folio, 2 volumes. Complete the first volume including 75 numbered plates, some folding and 1 engraving in-text. Second volume with the engraved dedication page and 100 (of the 103) plates, some folding (missing the plates XVIII-XX). Three title page vignettes on first volume and the two parts of the second volume.

Pococke has travelled in the Levant for 3 years (1737-1740), publishing one of the most influential and important travel accounts along the Holy Land, Cyprus, Crete, the Aegean islands, Asia Minor and modern-day Continental and Northern Greece. Most of the plates are after Pococke’s drawings, many drawn on spot.

Full-calf with newer spines keeping the contemporary covers paneled in gilt, all edges red. Ex-libris “Βιβλιοθήκη Σπ. Λοβέρδου” in gilt on pastedown of the 1st vol. External light wear along extremities, interior in very fine condition.
