CARNE John, Syria, the Holy Land, Asia Minor &c&c. Illustrated. In a series of views, drawn from nature by W H Bartlett, William Purser, &c. First [… Second… Third], London, Fisher, Son & Co., [1836–7]. First edition, 2 vols. in 3 (vol.1 and vols.2-3), large 4to, pp. [iv], 80; 76; 60 (out of 100) pp. with engraved additional titles and 45 engraved plates in vol.1, 37 in vol.2 and 27 (out of 37) in vol.3. Missing title pages from vols. 2 and 3, along with 40 pages (with 10 engravings and 2 maps) from vol.3. The present album was the fruit of Carne’s collaboration with the Fischer publishing house, and was part of a project for a series of illustrated publications on the Ottoman Empire. Here Carne’s texts accompany drawings by W.H. Bartlett, W. Purser and T. Allom, depicting monuments and locations in Syria, the Holy Land and Asia Minor. Bartlett must have travelled in the East for the first time from 1834 to 1835. In the third volume there are drawings by Allom, who most probably travelled in the region from 1836 to 1837. The album contains views of the Holy Land, Lebanon, Damascus, Rhodes, Syros, Alexandria, Tripolis, Aleppo in Syria, Cilicia, Antioch and other places of pilgrimage in the Eastern Mediterranean, both Christian and Muslim, as well as a map of Asia Minor and greater Syria. Contemporary fabric binding, gilt title on cover and gilt decoration belt on edges; restored cloth spine and corners; visibly worn. A very good copy in nineteenth-century diaper calf, backstrips gilt with green labels, covers, board edges and turn-ins all gilt-rolled, edges and endpapers marbled. Joints and board edges lightly worn, head of vol. 1 backstrip chipped, still quite handsome. First edition. “TBlackmer 291. Röhricht 1690. Weber 1125.
