WALSH Robert, “Voyage en Turquie et à Constantinople, traduit de l’anglais par H. Vilmain et E. Rives”, Turin, Chez les Frères Reycend et Ce., 1828. FIRST EDITION, in 8vo, pp. xvi,324. With 7 lithographed plates, 1 multiple folded map of the Balkan countries (mounted and stained) and 1 folded map of the area around Constantinople (stained and slightly torn at the top)

The Irishman Robert Walsh (1772-1852) was chaplain to the British Embassy in Constantinople for several years, when Lord Strangford was ambassador (1821-1824 and 1830-1835). This edition, a translation from the English original, is printed in Turin, after the first French translation printed in Paris in 1828. It narrates Walshs return journey from Constantinople to England (1824-1825), touching on a large number of very interesting subjects, such as the minorities (Greeks and Jews), the conditions of travelling in Ottoman territories, Ali Pasha, the massacre of the Janissaries, antiquities and Christian churches, Greeks in Vienna and Budapest.

Contemporary half leather binding, marbled carton boards and end papers. Visible external wear, spine heavy worn (dry leather, cracked and some parts missing). Foxing and scattered spotting inside, but clean and tight pages. Marbles edges. Good and Rare copy.
