Born on the island of Chalkis from an aristocratic Phanariot family, he became an important silk tissues manufacturer in Lyon and consul of Turkey and Greece later. His collection of manuscripts and precious books was one of the most important in France. After the death of his beloved wife locked his library and in 1867 sold his collection, which was sold in public auction for several days by Firmin Didot (who among many famous collectors bought himself many lots).
