Complete with 51 full page & double page plates and numerous illustrations in text. Original brown cloth with decorated boards and spine (embossed lettering and designs in black and gold), clothed endpapers and gilt edges. Light shelf wear, mainly on spine head & tail, bumped corners, interior in Very Good condition (some scattered spotting).

Jakob von Falkes work was extremely popular in his day. First published in 1878-1880, it brought together the knowledge known at the time in the form of an illustrated encyclopaedia. The presentation encompasses all areas of life: history and politics, everyday life and customs, art and literature. Enriched with numerous, often full-page or double-page wood engravings; domestic scenes, graceful landscapes, ancient sites and works of art of all kinds alternate in quick succession.
