LAURIERE Jules de, ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΙ/ THESSALONIKI, c. 1870. Very rare albumen photo 21×27 cm., depicting local people at Galerius Arch (Aψίδα Γαλεριου), taken by the pioneer photographer and archaeologist Jules de Lauriere. Jules de Laurière (1825-1894) was a pioneering figure of “photographic journalism” in archeology. He was active member of the largest French archaeological societies and associations and he traveled throughout Europe, and North Africa to document through the image, the ruins, museums and excavations of these regions of the world. Rounded edges, attached on thick carton. Photographer’s cachet on the lower right corner and on verso.
