Charles Newton was British consul in Mytilini from 1852 to 1859. He excavated for the first time Halicarnassus (Bodrum) and other ancient sites of the Asia Minor coastline. This is the popular account of his archaeological works in Asia Minor, including detailed & accurate descriptions of his travels in the Greek islands of Lesvos (Mytilini), Rhodes & Kalymnos. The plates include albumen prints of antiquities by F. Bedford and etchings after very early photographs by Spackman and Colnaghi.
