THEYLS Willem, “Memoires pour servir a l’histoire de Charles XII. Roi de Suede. Contenant ce qui s’est passe pendant le sejour de ce Prince dans l’Empire Ottoman…”, Leyde, Jean du Vivier, 1722. First edition. Small 8vo (17,5x12cm), pp.[6],392. Full leather, spine with raised bands. Complete with frontispiece of Constantinople. A fine copy of a scarce work. Willem Theyls was the interpret and chancellor of the Dutch Ambassador in the Ottoman Empire. He provides first hand descriptions of places and habits as he accompanied Charles XII to his wanderings in Constantinople and Thrace and offers valuable information about important agreements, such as the 1711 peace treaty terms between Russians and Turks, as he participated in the negotiations and had access to rare Ottoman documents. The second part of this work is a contemporary rare description of the recapture of the Morea by the Ottoman Turks in 1715. VERY RARE. Not in Atabey or Blackmer.
