FONTANIER , “Voyages en Orient, entrepris par ordre du government francais de l’annee 1821 a l’annee 1829”, Paris, 1829. First Edition. 2 volumes. 8vo, pp.361+ xiij,332. First volume entitled: Constantinople, Grece. Second volume entitled: Turquie d’Asie. Half titles, folding map & 8 plates. Contemporary half calf with light edge-wear. The two volumes were published separately, but the same year, for two distinct travels. Victor Fontanier travelled for many years, as French diplomatic agent in the Levant. The first volume contains an important account of the Greek war of Independence for the years 1827/29, written from the newly liberated Greek areas. After the massacre at Chios he visited Chios along many other Aegean islands. The second volume deals with his travels in Black sea coast, Armenia and later to Sivas (Sevastia) and Amassya compiling a rare travel account of unknown at that time areas of the North Anatolia.
