dell’ Impero Ottomano…, continente la Provincie della Bosnia, Servia, Macedonia… per servire di continuazione alla carta del Teatro della Guerre Presente”, Venezia, 1788. Extremely rare copper engraved map (67x50cm) of Northern Greece and the Balkans, covering the area from Thessaly and Epirus up to the Danube and from Adriatic to the Black Sea. Extremely Fine condition, with a beautiful decorative cartouche, typical of Venetian cartographical tradition of the time. This map, published separately in Venice in early 1788, aims to serve as a continuation on another map of the Theatre of war, as it is clearly stated on title. In late 1787 Ottoman empire declared war against Russia, in an attempt to re-occupy the Crimea area, lost since 1774. The European interest is great and Zatta publishes a map of the Theatre of War covering the Russian-Turkish fronts around the Black Sea area. Few months after, Austria declares war against the Ottomans and the area of interest changes significantly, as the hostilities cover all the northern part of the Balkan peninsula, including Macedonia and other regions. As a result, a new map was needed. The map was issued separately in one big loose sheet and certainly in very small print run. Luckily, this copy has been included in a contemporary composite (made on order) Atlas, bearing in ink the number 10. The only other example, that of the Marciana Library of Venice is unbound flat as issued. Not in Zacharakis or any other reference. Only one copy identified in Public institutions worldwide. Extremely Rare.
