‘22.8.1936. Crash of the ”Scipio” at Mirabella Bay. Air cover from Colombo, Ceylon, to England, posted 13.8.36 to fly by Imperial Airways. The liner ”Scipio” which operated the Mediterranean stage, crashed in the sea off Crete during a storm. All mail has been salvaged & carried to Athens. This cover was flown in another machine to London, arr. at Sidcup on 25.8.36. A marking “DAMAGED BY SEA WATER” was applied there. (Hellas CF19).’
