Demosthenes / ΔΗΜΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ, “Δημοσθένους Λόγοι και Προοίμια Δημηγορικὰ και Επιστολαί”, Paris, Johannes Benenatus, 1570. Folio (33.5cm), pp. [50], 798, [58], 31 contemporary Blanc sheets with handwritten inscriptions at the top of almost each sheet. Text in Greek, with only preface, indexes and annotations in Latin. Ex-libris handwritten inscription on title page. Impressive printer’s devise on title page and colophon, woodcut ornaments and engraved initials. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten (prob. later) title on spine. Light spotting inside, occasional underlining and commenting. Later restoration along inner joints. This edition is considerably improved compared to earlier ones and the Aldine editio princeps of 1504 as it is based on valuable manuscripts from the royal library and moreover the book is edited by Guillaume Morel. Morel had been the royal printer and collaborated with Turnèbe, who from 1555 held the royal chair for Greek in Paris. The edition also comprises the annotation by Ulpian of Antioch to the Orations by Demosthenes. Hoffmann I 509, Brunet II/1 588, Renouard, Imprimeurs III 471 (628).
