FÉNELON FRANÇOIS De Salygnac De La Motthe, “LES AVENTURES DE TELEMAQUE, Fils d’Ulysse / Nouvelle Edition, augmentee et corrigée sur le manuscript de lauteur, […], A Paris, Chez Bossange, Masson et Besson, 1797. In 12mo, p. [6],492,[2].
A beautiful edition illustrated with frontispiece and 10 full page plates out of text. At the crossroads of the learning novel (for royal pupils) and the anti-absolutist political manifesto (satire of the reign of Louis XIV), the “Adventures of Telemachus” is an adventure novel, first published in 1699, that brought about both Fénelons disgrace at court and his immediate and subsequent celebrity. Fénelons work exerted a profound influence on the philosophical thought of the eighteenth century, that of the Enlightenment. Text in French.
Good condition of the binding, work in its period full brown leather, good condition of the covers and the spine, friction from use, corners and caps rubbed, upper cap soaring, decorated spine, gilt titling on a piece of morocco. Good interior condition, clean and tight, slight foxing. Ex libris sticker.
Good Copy.
