The second edition of John Davies critical edition of the works of Maximus of Tyre, second century Platonist, (originally published 1703), with revisions by Jeremiah Markland. Marklands edition is based on that of John Davies, contains material supplied by another eminent classical scholar, Richard Bentley, and is dedicated to the physician and book collector Richard Mead, a founder member of the Society for the Promotion of Learning, under whose aegis the work was published.

Text in Greek and Latin. Fine vignette on last page. Contemporary full calf, spine with raised bands, title on red morocco in gilt and blind-stamped decorations in gilt. External rubbing, wear along joints and spine’s extremities. Interior with just occasional and light spotting. Ex-libris label on pastedown.
