Rare study by the leading nineteenth-century French Orientalist Émile-Louis Burnouf. Burnouf has firstly investigated the Athenian antiquities during his first 2 months visit in Athens in 1849. He was then appointed as principal of the French School at Athens from 1867–1875, when he enriched his investigations, resulting in the current study.
