The author was inspired by his own travels to Constantinople. He leaned on the existing publications on this subject, that he intended to correct and complete, including the Abbot Mignot which ended the history with the reign of Mahmoud in 1740. He always recognised the legitimacy of the Ottoman Empire and was convinced that the Greek revolution was largely due to the instigation of the Paris Greek Committee. A second edition of this work appeared in 1817 and an Italian translation by G. Barbieri was published at Milan in 1821.
